Cebu Bets on Seven-Hectare Arena to Reverse Tourism Decline
The Philippines' largest Visayas venue aims to position the island as a regional SMICE hub after visitor numbers stumbled in late 2025.

KEY TAKEAWAYS
- ·SM Prime opened a seven-hectare, 25,000-capacity arena in Cebu in July, the largest venue in the Visayas and part of a two-decade development plan.
- ·Cebu airport passengers rose to 6.46 million in the first half of 2026 from 5.9 million a year earlier, signaling recovery from late-2025 disasters that hurt tourism.
- ·The arena has secured over 20 bookings for 2026 and aims to position Cebu as a sports and events hub alongside Manila's Mall of Asia Arena.
A Seven-Billion-Peso Bet on Cebu's Coastal Strip
SM Prime opened the SM Seaside Cebu Arena in early July, a seven-hectare complex on the South Road Properties waterfront designed to hold 25,000 guests. The venue debuted with back-to-back concerts by Filipino pop group BINI, which sold more than 20,000 tickets for its mid-July performance.
The facility is the largest of its kind in the Visayas and the product of a development blueprint SM Prime has held for two decades, according to chairman Hans Sy. Arquitectonica, the Miami-based firm behind landmark projects across Asia and Latin America, handled the design. The arena features 30 luxury suites, direct mall access, and a center-hung display system that integrates real-time data for sports broadcasts and live shows.
Cebu's airport authority recorded 6.46 million passengers in the first six months of 2026, up from 5.9 million in the same stretch of 2025. That gap reflects the island's effort to recover from natural disasters late last year that depressed visitor traffic. SM Prime and local officials believe the arena can accelerate the rebound by drawing domestic concert-goers and eventually international sporting events.
The SMICE Ambition
Regan Rex King, president of the Cebu Chamber of Commerce and Industry, frames the venue as infrastructure for the island's push into sports, meetings, incentives, conferences, and exhibitions. He told local media in late July that a world-class arena positions Cebu as a contender in Asia's SMICE circuit, a category that blends business travel with large-scale entertainment.
Governor Pamela Baricuatro echoed that view, noting the project signals confidence in Cebu's ability to host international events. She expects the arena to generate jobs for local workers, artists, athletes, and vendors tied to the hospitality supply chain.
SM Prime has already secured more than 20 bookings for 2026, spanning concerts, live productions, and sports tournaments. The company declined to disclose the full event calendar but confirmed commitments from local and international acts. Sy suggested that pairing the Cebu arena with SM's 15,000-seat Mall of Asia venue in Manila gives promoters a two-city option that can make Philippine stops more attractive to touring artists.
Comparing Capacity and Track Record
Manila's Mall of Asia Arena remains the country's benchmark. It hosted over 200 events in 2025 and logged 1.1 million attendees, a ten-percent increase from the prior year. Global acts such as Lady Gaga, Taylor Swift, Maroon 5, and BTS have played the venue, alongside tournaments like the 2025 FIVB Men's Volleyball World Championship.
The Cebu arena's 25,000-person capacity exceeds Mall of Asia's standard configuration, though the Manila venue can expand to 20,000 for certain shows. BINI drew roughly 30,000 fans across two nights at Mall of Asia in June, then sold out a single Cebu date the following month with more than 20,000 tickets.
Julia Abby Catibud, a frequent concert attendee, noted the Cebu facility offers a larger queuing area and a more industrial aesthetic than its Manila counterpart. She attended a show by Filipino rock band IV of Spades at the new arena and said the convenience of staying in Cebu instead of flying to Manila appealed to provincial audiences. Some of her Manila-based friends made the reverse journey for the BINI concert, flying south to catch the show.
Twenty Years in the Making
Hans Sy described the arena as the first piece of a long-term plan his late father, Henry Sy Sr., envisioned for Cebu. The elder Sy acquired a parcel in the city's North Reclamation Area decades ago and later expanded SM's footprint to the South Road Properties. The current development pipeline includes an SMX Convention Center adjacent to the arena, designed to handle trade shows and corporate gatherings.
SM Prime has not disclosed a timeline for the convention center or additional phases, but Sy indicated the company views Cebu as a multi-decade investment. The arena alone represents a seven-billion-peso commitment, and the surrounding infrastructure will require further capital as the waterfront district matures.
Cebu's tourism sector remains vulnerable to weather events and regional competition from destinations like Bali, Phuket, and Da Nang. The island's business leaders are betting that purpose-built event infrastructure can carve out a niche that leisure beach resorts cannot easily replicate. Whether that gamble pays off will depend on the arena's ability to attract repeat bookings, sustain ticket sales, and convince international promoters that Cebu belongs on the Asian touring map.
