- ·Banking stocks led the advance, with HDFC Bank climbing 3.6 percent, while defence counters rallied after the government approved 52,000 crore rupees in capital procurement proposals.
- ·Analysts project first-quarter fiscal 2027 earnings to decline 3 percent year-on-year across coverage universes, driven by oil marketing company weakness, though excluding that sector profit after tax is forecast to grow 14 percent.
Fourth Day of Advances
Mumbai's benchmark equity indices extended their upward trajectory Monday, marking a fourth consecutive session of advances. The Sensex closed at 78,285.07, adding 521.16 points, while the Nifty 50 settled at 24,430.35 after a 159.50-point climb. Both indices have accumulated gains exceeding 2 percent across the four-day period.
Banking counters dominated the session's momentum, with HDFC Bank surging 3.6 percent following a positive business update for the first quarter of fiscal year 2027. ICICI Bank, IndusInd Bank, and IDFC First Bank similarly attracted buying interest. Real estate stocks participated in the rally, alongside consumer durables, automotive manufacturers, and oil and gas producers.
The gains unfolded against a backdrop of softer crude oil prices and reduced tensions in West Asia. Brent crude's retreat provides relief for India's current account dynamics and supports the profitability outlook for state-owned fuel retailers. The broader market mirrored the benchmark strength, with mid-cap and small-cap indices closing in positive territory.
Defence and Industrial Movers
Defence-related equities outperformed after the Defence Acquisition Council approved capital procurement proposals totaling 52,000 crore rupees. Zen Technologies, Dynamatic Technologies, Paras Defence, and Data Patterns all posted notable advances.
Within the industrial segment, Dixon Technologies, Radico, Hitachi Energy, and GE Vernova T&D registered gains ranging from 3 to 7 percent. Hindalco, ONGC, Bajaj Auto, and Mahindra & Mahindra ranked among the Nifty 50's top performers. Conversely, Kotak Mahindra Bank, Max Healthcare, TCS, and Coal India faced selling pressure.
Market breadth remained balanced. Of 3,462 stocks traded on the NSE, 1,578 advanced while 1,769 declined. A total of 146 stocks reached 52-week highs, compared with 41 touching 52-week lows.
Earnings Season in View
Market participants are shifting attention to first-quarter fiscal 2027 earnings, with TCS, L&T Finance, and Anand Rathi scheduled to report results in the coming days. Motilal Oswal Financial Services projects a 3 percent year-on-year decline in earnings across its coverage universe for the quarter, driven primarily by weakness in oil marketing companies. Excluding that segment, profit after tax is forecast to grow 14 percent year-on-year.
The brokerage expects financials and metals to lead quarterly performance. Lending non-bank finance companies, private and public sector banks, metals, technology, capital goods, retail, consumer durables, and building materials are anticipated to contribute positively. Oil and gas, automobiles, healthcare, and cement sectors may weigh on aggregate results.
Despite near-term pressure, Motilal Oswal maintains a medium-term outlook for corporate earnings growth of approximately 15 percent compound annual growth rate during fiscal years 2026 through 2028.
Sectoral Divergence
Sectoral performance diverged Monday. Realty, consumer durables, automotive, and oil and gas indices closed higher, while media, public sector banks, information technology, and cement sectors ended lower. Within banking, Kotak Mahindra Bank, Union Bank, and Punjab National Bank lagged their peers.
In the mid-cap segment, Groww, MCX, Bank of India, Suzlon, and Bank of Maharashtra were among the session's largest decliners. Small-cap losers included Zensar Technologies, Ola Electric, and Pine Labs, while Swan Corp, Manappuram Finance, Welspun Corp, and Aegis Logistics advanced.
Investor sentiment remains cautiously optimistic as management commentary, crude oil pricing, foreign capital flows, and global interest rate expectations are likely to shape near-term market direction. Stock-specific movements are expected to dominate until earnings reports provide greater clarity on corporate performance and forward guidance.
Asian and European equity markets displayed mixed trends Monday, while U.S. markets were closed Friday for Independence Day. The stabilization in West Asia and expectations of a measured approach from the Federal Reserve have supported risk appetite in emerging markets, though volatility remains a feature of the current environment.
With the first-quarter earnings season underway, market participants will scrutinize not only reported figures but also management outlooks for the remainder of the fiscal year. The interplay between domestic earnings momentum and global macro developments will continue to influence positioning in Indian equities.
