Tech Weakness Weighs on Blue Chips
Indian equity benchmarks closed lower Tuesday as technology shares tumbled amid worries that elevated US borrowing costs could postpone corporate IT budgets globally. The Nifty 50 shed 80.50 points to finish at 23,865.75, a decline of 0.34 per cent, while the Sensex dropped 250 points to 76,478.
The technology sector led losses with a 2.5 per cent slide, the steepest among major industry groups. Public sector banks, media, banking, and consumer staples also retreated as traders navigated monthly derivatives settlement.
Automobile manufacturers faced pressure following Delhi's approval of its 2026-2030 electric vehicle policy, set to take effect July 1. Eicher Motors fell nearly 5 per cent on investor concerns about Royal Enfield's limited presence in the battery-powered motorcycle segment.
Broader Market Resilience
Smaller companies defied the benchmark weakness. The Nifty Midcap 100 climbed 0.4 per cent, while the Nifty Smallcap 100 advanced 1 per cent. Market internals remained constructive, with 1,919 stocks rising against 1,383 decliners across Indian exchanges.
Real estate shares led sectoral gains with advances exceeding 1 per cent, joined by chemicals and consumer durables. Pharmaceutical and healthcare stocks also outperformed the headline indices.
The Nifty 50 opened with an initial jump to 24,032.05 but surrendered early momentum, oscillating between 24,035.55 and 23,829.20 through the session. Bank Nifty declined 184.45 points to 57,542.90, forming a bearish technical pattern. India VIX, the volatility gauge, edged down 0.07 per cent to 13.60.
Banking Sector Developments
HDFC Bank announced the appointment of Rajiv Kumar, former Finance Secretary, as its new Non-Executive Chairman. Separately, Axis Bank CFO Puneet Sharma and Bandhan Bank CFO Rajeev Mantri both tendered resignations, with neither institution naming immediate successors.
Yes Bank's board authorized a capital raise of up to 16,000 crore rupees through equity and debt instruments. Infrastructure firm KEC International secured contracts valued at 1,754 crore rupees.
Currency and Commodity Movements
The rupee weakened for a third straight session, pressured by safe-haven dollar demand and corporate foreign exchange purchases. Spot dollar-rupee faced technical resistance at 95.10 with support identified at 94.40.
Gold prices rebounded after a weak start on short covering, with MCX Gold recovering more than 2,300 rupees to approximately 1,42,750 rupees. The recovery followed a nearly 12 per cent correction in COMEX futures during June, with the weaker domestic currency providing additional support.
Crude oil edged toward the 70-73 dollar per barrel range as the recent selloff paused. Uncertainty surrounding US-Iran negotiations in Doha and shipping concerns in the Strait of Hormuz underpinned prices. Domestic crude futures held near 6,700 rupees.
Industrial output data showed acceleration to 5.1 per cent in May from 4.9 per cent in April, driven by stronger electricity and gas supply growth.
Near-Term Outlook
Market participants will monitor the outcome of diplomatic discussions in Doha, crude price trajectories, and upcoming US employment figures including Non-Farm Payrolls. The start of first-quarter fiscal 2027 earnings season, monsoon progression, and foreign institutional investor flows are expected to keep the Nifty within a 23,800 to 24,200 trading band in coming sessions.
Ajit Mishra, Senior Vice President of Research at Religare Broking, noted that markets traded in a volatile yet narrow range on the monthly expiry day, extending the ongoing consolidation phase.
The divergence between large-cap weakness and midcap strength reflects selective positioning as investors await clarity on global monetary policy trajectories and domestic earnings momentum. Technology remains vulnerable to further weakness if US rate expectations remain elevated, while domestic-focused sectors continue to attract capital amid India's structural growth narrative.
