As Asia’s Digital Economy Accelerates, Recognition Is Expanding with It
As Asia’s digital economy enters a new phase shaped by AI, digital infrastructure and emerging technologies, recognition platforms are expanding to reflect the people and businesses driving the region’s next wave of innovation.

KEY TAKEAWAYS
- ·Asia’s digital economy is accelerating, driven by AI, digital infrastructure and emerging technologies.
- ·AAO is expanding its regional recognition ecosystem with the launch of the Asia Tech Awards, adding technology to its architecture, design and hospitality platforms.
- ·ATA joins AADA and AHA to reflect Asia’s increasingly interconnected landscape of design, hospitality and digital innovation.
Asia’s digital economy is moving into a more consequential phase. The conversation is no longer centred simply on getting people and businesses online, but on how digital infrastructure, artificial intelligence, and emerging technologies will reshape the region’s next stage of growth.
In Southeast Asia, the digital economy is projected to surpass US$300 billion in gross merchandise value in 2025, with revenues reaching an estimated US$135 billion, according to the latest e-Conomy SEA report from Google, Temasek, and Bain & Company. Over the past decade, the region has added more than 200 million internet users, while more than 60% of payments are now digital.
Artificial intelligence is becoming a particularly significant part of this transition. The same report found that consumer interest in AI topics in Southeast Asia is three times higher than the global average. More than 680 AI start-ups across the region attracted over US$2.3 billion in investment in the 12 months leading up to the report, while planned data-centre capacity is expected to grow by 180%.
The wider Asia-Pacific market is also seeing substantial technology investment. IDC forecasts regional spending on AI and generative AI to reach US$555.2 billion by 2030, while total ICT spending is expected to reach US$647 billion in 2026.
For Southeast Asia, however, growth is accompanied by a more complex challenge: turning digital readiness into meaningful participation. The ASEAN Digital Economy Outlook 2026, published by the World Economic Forum in September 2026 based on evidence from more than 4,500 businesses, highlights persistent friction around cross-border payments, digital identity, data transfers, and digital trade.
This makes the question of who is building the region’s digital future and how increasingly relevant.
Recognition moves with the landscape
Against this backdrop, the Asia Awards Organization (AAO) is expanding its regional awards ecosystem with the launch of the Asia Tech Awards (ATA), a joint partnership between AAO and Asia Press Center Group (APCG). The collaboration brings together AAO’s experience in regional awards and cross-industry recognition with APCG’s media and communications reach.
The new programme introduces technology and digital innovation as the third pillar of an organization whose existing platforms focus on architecture, design, and hospitality. Through the Asia Architecture Design Awards (AADA) and Asia Hospitality Awards (AHA), AAO has developed a regional network around the people, projects, and businesses shaping the physical and experiential dimensions of Asia.
Across four seasons of AADA and two seasons of AHA, AAO says its programmes have recorded more than 1,500 nominations, 250 winners, participation from 15 countries and 20 international jurors.
Its growth has also been reflected in the scale and setting of its Winners’ Nights. Previous editions have taken place at Marina Bay Sands in Singapore, SO/ Bangkok in Thailand and The Shilla Seoul in South Korea. In 2026, the organization moved the combined AADA and AHA celebration to Dragon Pearl Cave in Quang Ninh, Vietnam - the world’s first international awards ceremony stage inside a natural cave.
ATA now adds a different dimension to that ecosystem.

Technology no longer sits apart
The expansion comes at a time when the boundaries between technology and other industries are becoming increasingly porous.
Digital systems are changing how buildings are designed and operated. AI and automation are influencing hospitality, from personalisation to operational management. FinTech is reshaping financial services, while data infrastructure is becoming fundamental to the functioning of cities and businesses.
Technology, in other words, increasingly operates as an underlying layer across sectors rather than as a standalone industry.
ATA is positioned around this wider landscape, focusing on start-ups, products, and creative technologists driving innovation across technology and the digital economy in Asia. Its inaugural programme comprises 24 award categories, according to AAO.
That places technology alongside two industries already undergoing substantial transformation. AADA examines how Asia designs and builds; AHA considers how the region creates hospitality and destination experiences; ATA turns the lens towards the technologies and businesses increasingly shaping both.
The result is a reflection of three interconnected layers of regional development: how Asia is designed, how it is experienced, and how it innovates.

A broader platform for a changing Asia
The timing also coincides with a new season for AAO. The 2027 AADA and AHA are now open for entries under the shared theme “Visionary Asia”, with 30 categories in each programme and entries open until 25 February 2027.
ATA is set to join the 2027 cycle as the organization’s newest programme, with its inaugural registration currently being introduced by AAO. The three awards are expected to converge at AAO’s next Winners’ Night in Bangkok, Thailand in May 2027, bringing the architecture, hospitality, and technology communities together under one regional platform.
For AAO, the move into technology represents a notable widening of its original remit. More broadly, it reflects the changing nature of innovation across Asia, where the next generation of ideas is increasingly emerging between industries rather than within them.
As the region moves from digital adoption towards AI-enabled growth, connected infrastructure, and deeper cross-border integration, the platforms recognizing its innovators are evolving too.
Architecture and design practices can explore and submit to the Asia Architecture Design Awards (AADA), while hospitality brands and hoteliers can enter the Asia Hospitality Awards (AHA). For those shaping Asia’s digital future, the Asia Tech Awards (ATA) offers a new platform to follow the programme and its inaugural season.
